ARCHITECTURE AND ENVIRONMENT (ARC 60504)
TUTOR: MS. SITI NORZAINI ZAINAL ABIDIN
The module introduces the components of environmental conditions and issues. It focuses on human intervention affecting the environment both positively and negatively and the relationship of buildings with the natural system. Students will be introduced to basic environmental awareness through lectures and discussions. Additionally the module introduces students to the basic elements of climate and their influences on architecture, which aims to facilitate students to create acceptable environmentally conscious and comfortable building designs. There will be formative and summative assessments in this module comprising of an assignment, test and case study.
PROJECT 01: CASE STUDY- LIGHTING AND SHADING
The objectives of this project are:
• To identify passive design strategies for Shading and Lighting.
• To analyze the effect of thermal comfort/ comfort factors in a person and in a space relating to Shading and Lighting.
• To be able to criticize design of the space in terms of thermal comfort by referring to MS1525 , UBBL and GBI.

SELF-REFLECTION
Through this module, I'm able to have more awareness about the importance of the relationship between building design and the environment. Besides that, I was able to learn about how different climates and external environmental factors impacts architecture and how they can be utilize for optimal efficiency in terms of sustainability and functionality. A main topic that this module revolves around is the use of passive design in buildings as we were asked to improvise our building and implement it in our project. I'm glad that through that, I'm able to learn about the various ways and methods to use our energy and natural resources effectively so that we can ensure a sustainable future. After completing this module, I've gain interest in sustainable architecture as it is important for us to have sufficient resources for the current demands and for our future generations. Perhaps through it, we can also salvage the deteriorating environmental conditions that we're in.
Grabbing this chance, I would also like to thank my lecturers and especially my tutor, Ms Siti who provided my groupmates and I guidance throughout this semester. I truly appreciate her prompt reply and helpful suggestions.
