GREEN STRATEGIES FOR BUILDING
DESIGN (ARC61804)

Tutor:  Mr. Nik Syazwan Bin Nik Ab. Wahab

Assignment 01 :
Passive Green Building Case Studies Poster and Booklet

In this project, we were assigned into a group of 5 to produce an A0 infographic poster and a A4 booklet of case studies of the application of passive sustainable design strategies within an architectural project as well as a pre-recorded presentation to explain our research and analysis.

Firstly, we were required to choose two case studies with a preferably 3-5 storey
height where one is from the tropical climate region while another from the other climatic region such as Arid, Mediterranean, Temperate Continental, Polar respectively. Each group were then expected to identify and compare the passive design strategies applied in both case studies which included the factors of site planning, day lighting, façade design, natural ventilation and strategic landscaping with references from the lecture topics from week 2 to 7.
With the procured information and lecture materials, we worked together as a team to further analyse and elaborate the impact of these passive strategies on the quality and
spatial experience of the chosen project and presented them as follows.

REFLECTION

Through this assignment, I have learnt to critically assess and filter through the information we've garnered from the Internet to ensure the accuracy of the data collected. It allows me to identify the relevant data and omit any redundancy in the presentation of our project. Besides this, I've managed to gain a deeper understanding about the various facets of the passive sustainable design strategies in terms of site planning, daylighting, facade design, natural ventilation, strategic design nd other renewable design strategies and how they work together in order to optimize the functioning of the building structure as we anatomize our case details in detail.

Working in a group has also taught me accountability as we are all equally responsible for the outcome of the project. In order to complete and submit our work on time, we had to communicate frequently to confirm our delegated tasks and timeline and to keep each other o track of our progress. Overall, I had a good time working with my teammates and was glad that I get to widen my knowledge on design strategies that contribute to a greener building and environment.

Assignment 02 :
Passive Green Building Strategies Report

In our second project, each of the us are required to individually develop the passive and active green building strategies simultaneously with
our final architectural studio project. Students are expected to
employ all relevant passive green building strategies from their tropical building case study done in the Assignment 1 wherever applicable, including but not limited to site planning, day lighting, façade design, natural ventilation, strategic landscaping and other renewable energies. In the following weeks, we get to attend weekly tutorial sessions with our assigned tutor which in our case in Mr. Nik Syazwan for further guidance and feedback. As a final outcome, we were to compile and document our processes and final proposal in the soft copy of an A3 report.

REFLECTION

Through this assessment, I find that I've managed to reinforce the knowledge I've grasp from Assignment 1 and apply it accordingly to my Architectural Design IV Project to increase the longevity of both my building and its surrounding environment. In this module, I've learnt that Green Building focuses on increasing the efficiency of resource use – energy, water, and materials – while reducing the building impact on human health and the environment during its lifecycle whether it be through better siting, design, construction, operation, maintenance, andremoval. Therefore, I'm encouraged to incorporate Green Building design strategies into my upcoming projects as a means to a more sustainable living conditions for the generations to come.

In general, I've enjoyed this module and was glad to have the experience of conducting a site visit to Putrajaya with the semester's batch. It was an insightful one where we were introduced and exposed to the innovative and newfangled city designed for the future. Other than that, I'm also really thankful for Mr. Shawn who has patiently guided and assisted us throughout the semester and enabled us to complete the module with satisfaction. Overall, it was a constructive semester which gave me a stepping stone to green architectural designs.
